Shanda Karasek and Robin Andersen will be presenting on “Working with At-Risk Youth in the System: A Therapist’s Perspective”.  Shanda will be covering treatment considerations, importance of self-care, and special skills needed to work with youth involved in the foster care system.  Robin will be discussing common barriers/obstacles to treating youth on probation, as well as strategies that can be effective in establishing rapport, increasing motivation, and keeping youth on probation accountable during their participation in therapy.  Issues around confidentiality and navigating the court system will also be addressed from both perspectives.

Presenter Bios:

Shanda Karasek is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.  She is currently working full-time as a ‘CEGU’ Therapist at the County of Orange Health Care Agency, providing crisis intervention, case management, and short-term therapy services to children and adolescents residing at Orangewood Children and Family Center.  Shanda has been trained in TF-CBT, EMDR, and Play Therapy, and is currently working on her certifications for each.  Shanda has recently started a part-time private practice in Newport Beach, specializing in Play Therapy for children/teens, and working with adoptive/foster families.  Shanda is also serving her fourth year on the Board of Directors for OC-CAMFT, and currently holds the Prelicensed Director position.

Robin Andersen is a Marriage and Family Therapist Registered Intern with 3000+ hours of experience.  She is currently working as a Juvenile Drug Court Therapist at Vista Hill, a non-profit organization in San Diego County.  She is also the Director of Community Outreach for the San Diego North County Chapter of CAMFT, and the owner and creator of Prelicensed (Prelicensed.com) – a free resource for MFT registered interns, trainees, and students in California.
