Cognitive therapy while one of the most common therapies of the 21st century is also frequently misunderstood. In fundamentals of cognitive therapy you will learn the theory, practice and philosophy of cognitive therapy. You will learn the 3 levels of thinking that humans experience and how cognitive distortions appear at each level.  You will also learn how to intervene at each level. We will examine ways to implement cognitive therapy concepts with simple skill interventions as well as address pitfalls and mistakes often made by therapists attempting to implement cognitive therapy principles with their clients.

One of the most misunderstood aspects of cognitive therapy is the significance of emotional presence in the process. You will learn the importance of emotion in cognitive therapy and the specific relationship between distressing emotions (depression, anxiety, anger, guilt, resentment, etc.) and their underlying cognitive process.

We will cover fundamental interventions such as developing thought records, tailoring the process to the client, and scaling, as well as original concepts as the empathic flip and active versus objectified emotions and their relationship to effective cognitive therapy.

While we will cover cognitive therapy for all emotional distress the program will focus on cognitive therapy for anxiety.

About the Speaker

Steven M. Sultanoff, Ph.D. is a practicing psychologist, university professor (Pepperdine University), consultant, and professional trainer.  He has over 20 years of training in CBT including training programs with Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck and 12 years on the staff at the Center for Cognitive Therapy in Newport Beach.

Over the past 13 years he has offered over 300 continuing education seminars for MFT’s, psychologists, and social workers.  In addition to cognitive therapy his program offerings include Clinical Supervision, Therapeutic Uses of Humor, and Emotional Intelligence. All of his workshops include well fundamental material as well as innovative concepts that expand traditional training.

Dr. Sultanoff is an expert on emotions (both distressing--depression, anxiety, anger, resentment, guilt, etc. and uplifting--joy, excitement, delight, etc.) and has linked emotions to specific underlying cognitive patterns.  This linkage has advanced the practice of cognitive therapy by assisting therapists to connect emotion to cognition or cognition to emotion thus facilitating the cognitive restructuring process.

Currently, he is further developing these concepts in a book on the treatment of anxiety disorders including panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.  In addition, he addresses human motivation as illustrated by his work on motivation through passion versus motivation through avoidance of distress.

In addition to his CBT expertise Dr. Sultanoff is an internationally recognized expert in therapeutic humor and has recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Therapeutic Humor from the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor.
