Presented by Dr. Mercedes Samudio, DSW, LCSW Earn 1.5 CE (CAMFT CE #59405) Description: This workshop will empower clinicians to approach culturally expansive strategies to effectively engage African American families in healing recognizing historical, systemic, and relational dynamics that impact engagement and treatment outcomes. Educational Goals - Increase cultural expansion in clinical practice by equipping therapists with the knowledge and skills to adapt interventions that respect African American families' cultural values, strengths, and live experiences. - Deepen understanding of historical and systemic influences on mental health by providing clinicians with a critical lens on how historical trauma, racism, and systemic barriers impact trust, engagement and mental health outcomes in African American communities. - Enhance clinical strategies for engagement and healing by empowering therapists to assess racial trauma, recognize their own biases, and apply culturally expansive approaches to improve long-term mental wellness for African American families. Learning Objectives 1. Name one culturally adapted intervention to better serve African American families in treatment. 2. Identify the three concepts of engaging African American families for treatment. 3. Identify 2 ways racial trauma presents in African American families and racial bias in themselves.
