Course Description

In a time of #MeToo, mental health stigma, and racial discrimination, clinicians need to answer the growing need for how we work with clients who are impacted by dehumanization.  This special panel presentation will examine the process of human devaluation. Panelists will explore the emotional experience of dehumanization, psychological motivations of devaluation, clinical devaluation parallels, and how to challenge dehumanization. Attendees will gain experiential knowledge of the dehumanization process and clinical applications.

"All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident." - Arthur Schopenhauer

Learning Objectives:

  1. Attendees will be able to define stereotype.
  2. Attendees will be able to state one psychological function that devaluation serves.
  3. Attendees will be able to define ‘bystander effect.’
  4. Attendees will be able to identify one way to challenge dehumanization.
