Course Description:

The DSM-5-TR includes a diagnosis of Genito-Pelvic Pain/Penetration Disorder, yet most mental health providers have no idea what it is or surprisingly how often it occurs in both cisgender and transgender people. GPPPD can affect quality of life, relationships, and the ability to experience sexual pleasure. Learn about the pelvic floor, its connection to our psychological state, and how it is treated and when to refer to a specialist in sexual medicine.

Learning Objectives

After the session participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the prevalence, symptoms diagnostic criteria of Genito-Pelvic Pain/Penetration Disorder.
  2. Describe at least two psychological treatment approaches that can help when sex is painful.
  3. Identify to whom mental health providers may need to make referrals and how to do so ethically.

    ABOUT THE SPEAKER:


    Stephanie Buehler, MPW, PsyD, CST-S, IF is a licensed psychologist, AASECT-Certified Sex Therapist and Supervisor, and Fellow of the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health. She is the President of The Buehler Institute at LearnSexTherapy.com, which provides continuing education, supervision, and consultation in sex therapy. Dr. Buehler is the author a bestselling textbook, What Every Mental Health Professional Needs to Know about Sex, 3rd Ed. Dr. Buehler has spoken to lay and professional audiences around the globe and is frequently quoted in the media; most recently she was filmed by Japanese public television for a special on sexuality.
