Double Trouble? Not with Consent! Navigating Dual Relationships and Ethical Boundaries with Care (includes complex situations, psychotherapy vs life coaching, and special populations)
Brief Summary:
This presentation on Dual Relationships and the Therapeutic Relationship emphasizes the importance of maintaining profession boundaries to protect clients' welfare, focusing on ethical standards like those outlined by CAMFT. It defines dual relationships as situations where therapists engage in multiple roles with clients and stresses that while not all are harmful, those that compromise objectivity or exploit clients are unethical. The presentation covers key legal implications, particularly concerning sexual misconduct, and explores the dynamics of transference and countertransference. Case studies illustrate boundary-setting challenges, and distinctions between therapeutic and life coaching relationships are discussed, highlighting the stricter ethical and legal guidelines governing therapy. Informed consent plays a crucial role in managing dual relationships and ensuring clients fully understand the risks, with transparency being essential to maintaining ethical integrity in both therapy and life coaching.

Participants will be able to:
- Name two ethical guidelines related to dual relationships and informed consent.
- Identify two legal responsibilities outlined in CAMFT standards and California law regarding dual relationships and informed consent.
- Identify 2 potential dual relationships and their associated risks and explain how informed consent can be used to maintain profession boundaries.
- Apply how informed consent functions as a protective tool in both dual relationships and therapeutic contexts.
- Describe two differences between therapeutic and life coaching relationships, particularly the ethical and informed consent considerations.
